More than 200,000 Receive Antiretrovirals in Mozambique

Mozambique’s Health Ministry reported today that more than 280,000 people living with HIV/AIDS are receiving antiretrovirals with the support of the government and international organizations.

“All the activities planned for 2011 in the fight against the killer disease have been accomplished,” said the ministry, which added that the total number of residents receiving ARVs surpassed the national goal of 240,000. With 14.6 percent of its population infected, Mozambique is among the southern African nations hit hardest by HIV/AIDS. The disease has killed 1.7 million Mozambicans since 1986.
