A new condom that could help men maintain an erection may be close to regulatory approval in the United Kingdom. Created by British biotech firm Futura Medical and licensed to the Durex condom brand, CSD500 is lined with a vasodilating gel and targets men who might otherwise have trouble keeping an erection while wearing a condom.
If it gains UK approval quickly, the “Viagra condom” may be on the market within the year. US Food and Drug approval would require more clinical trial data.
Regulators are interested in CSD500’s potential impact on STD rates. A product that improves an erection’s firmness and duration during use could help keep the condom from slipping off, which increases STD risk.
Durex parent company Reckitt Benckiser plans to evaluate the condom’s commercial potential in Europe if it is approved. If successful there, the company would gear up for the US market.
