The Philadelphia Department of Public Health (PDPH) has teamed up with iCondom, the free condom-finding iPhone application, to introduce iCondom Philly, which will help users find the nearest free condom-dispensing site in the city.Philadelphia ranks in the top ten among large US cities for reportable STDs, which disproportionately impact African Americans and youths. Recent data also show that teenagers who contract an STD are more at risk for HIV infection. iCondom Philly is meant to augment the city health department’s current endeavors to stem high STD rates among local youth.
iCondom Philly will debut alongside TakeControlPhily.org, a PDPH STD Control Program website presenting safe-sex information. Website offerings include videos on proper condom usage, and the latest plan to provide condoms via mail to youths too embarrassed to pick them up in person.
“When we designed iCondom,” said founder Morgane Danielou, “We had in mind that the application could be easily developed to meet the needs of each city’s publicly run condom programs that exist worldwide. Philadelphia immediately understood how useful the application could be in targeting youth 11 to 19 years-old.” The application can be tailored to each user’s chosen locale. iCondom uses crowd sourcing and Google Maps to show the nearest condom-dispensing site.
Both iCondom and iCondom Philly are available for download from the online Apple App Store.
