MISTER Makes a Positive Impact

The AIDS service organization Positive Impact has developed a new program that offers culturally competent prevention and mental health services for people affected by HIV. A central theme of MISTER (Men's Information Services: Testing, Empowerment, Resources) is supporting gay men in making better choices.

MISTER's "Friend to Friend" session meets once a week for four weeks to discuss issues including self-esteem, healthy relationships, substance abuse, and domestic violence. "This culminates in a 90-minute wrap-up session to discuss lessons learned and experience and skills gained, and perhaps to even share how new friendships have been formed with other men during the experience," according to the group.

In addition, "The RISE [Relationships, Intimacy & Sex Experience] project is designed to help gay men better understand relationships and dating, self-esteem, homophobia, sexual identity, communication, and negotiation skills," MISTER's website states.

Utilizing federal, state, and foundation funding, MISTER offers free rapid HIV testing on a walk-in basis on Mondays through Wednesdays, 10 a.m.-7 p.m.; Thursdays and Fridays, 10 a.m.-5 p.m.; and Saturdays, 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

Free STD testing also is available on a walk-in basis Tuesdays and Wednesdays, 2-7 p.m., and Thursdays and Fridays, noon to 5 p.m.

The Friends of AIDS Foundation is dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for HIV positive individuals and empowering people to make healthy choices to prevent the spread of the HIV virus. To learn more about The Friends of AIDS Foundation, please visit: http://www.friendsofaids.org.
