Saskatchewan Plan to Fight Rising HIV Rates Includes First Nations

Saskatchewan's new three-year AIDS strategy will work closely with First Nations and Métis communities, according to Dr. Moira McKinnon, chief health officer for the province. It also will coordinate with health regions, community-based programs and AIDS service organizations.

The direct cost of HIV/AIDS care in Saskatchewan is about $40 million (US $38.9 million) annually, McKinnon said. In 2009, the province was home to about 900 HIV patients and 250 people who had progressed to AIDS.

The Friends of AIDS Foundation is dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for HIV positive individuals and empowering people to make healthy choices to prevent the spread of the HIV virus. To learn more about The Friends of AIDS Foundation, please visit: http://www.friendsofaids.org.
