Magnum, the Trojan sub-brand of large-size condoms, has been mentioned in the lyrics of hip-hop artists such as Ludacris, Lil Wayne and Eminem. According to parent company Church & Dwight, Magnum is the most popular condom among African Americans.
This month, the brand is debuting its first advertising campaign, the "Magnum Live Large Project," featuring Ludacris in print, online, and radio ads.
Jim Daniels, Trojan's vice president of marketing, noted that Ludacris supports AIDS awareness efforts. "Ludacris has been actively involved in using his celebrity and immense talent to really try to advance improvements in sexual health," he said.
Dr. William L. Yarber of the Kinsey Institute for Research in Sex, Gender and Reproduction and a member of its Condom Use Research Team said a recent survey found 44.7 percent of male respondents reported poor condom fit during last use. "Typically they report they are more tight-fitting than loose-fitting," he said. Ill-fitting condoms can lead to breakage, slippage and other problems.
Yarber said his research indicates that having more size options would increase condom use and help decrease STDs and unintended pregnancy.
A central component of the campaign is a contest inviting participants to download base tracks from the Magnum Web site, record their own Magnum-themed lyrics and upload their entries. Site visitors will vote for their favorite, and the winner will receive $5,000 and a trip to Birthday Bash, a hip-hop festival in Atlanta on June 19. At the concert, Ludacris will congratulate the winner onstage.
