In recognition of his pioneering
contributions to research in HIV prevention and treatment, Durban scientist and
researcher Professor Salim Abdool Karim has been elected to the American
Institute of Medicine as a foreign associate, one of the highest of
international honors in the medical field.
Karim is the director of the Centre
for the AIDS Programme of Research in SA (Caprisa), Pro-Vice-Chancellor
(Research) at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, and was appointed president of
the SA Medical Research Council this year. He also holds several academic
positions in the United States.
During his long career, he has made
many contributions to the control of infectious disease, particularly to AIDS
and tuberculosis. Along with his wife, Professor Quarraisha Abdool Karim, he
reported the first HIV prevention technology for women research on tenofovir
gel, presented at the 2010 International AIDS Conference in Vienna.
In addition, his clinical research
on TB-HIV treatment has influenced World Health Organization guidelines on the
clinical management of co-infected patients.
