MDOC's HIV/AIDS Program a National Model

The US Department of Health and Human Services has cited the Mississippi Department of Corrections’ re-entry program for inmates leaving state prison as one of the nation’s best and a model for other corrections agencies.

The Mississippi AIDS Education Training Center developed the discharge manual, assisted MDOC to train personnel, and continues to assist with re-entry planning. The program includes checklists, social-service resources, HIV testing sites, contact information for social workers, housing information, services offered by the state department of health, and other information that the ex-offender may need. MDOC data show that 218 inmates are HIV positive, and 57 have AIDS.

The Friends of AIDS Foundation is dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for HIV positive individuals and empowering people to make healthy choices to prevent the spread of the HIV virus. To learn more about The Friends of AIDS Foundation, please visit: http://www.friendsofaids.org.
