HIV/AIDS Center Plans Move to Old Channel 12 Building in Phoenix

The Southwest Center for HIV/AIDS is moving forward with plans to upgrade to an expanded and modernized space by remodeling the old KPNX/Channel 12 building in downtown Phoenix. SCHW has been looking for a new home for some time, following a 2006 election in which voters approved bond money for a new center under community capital projects.

This summer, the City Council signed off on a $3.6 million deal with Gannett Co. for the Channel 12 building. Gannett owns Channel 12 and the Arizona Republic.

The 60,000-square-foot building is conveniently located near the Metro light rail system, a benefit to SCHW clients and volunteers who rely on mass transit. The space will be renovated to house all SCHW’s services under one roof. “It’s really critical to have that one-stop shop at the Channel 12 building,” said Carol Poore, the center’s president and CEO.

SCHW serves some 1,300 clients in the region and conducts prevention and education outreach for more than 30,000 people.

It offers confidential HIV testing and support groups for those affected, and it takes part in clinical trials.
