Christie Signs Bill Barring Fees for Rape Victims

A bill signed into law Thursday by Gov. Chris Christie prevents sexual assault survivors from being billed directly for post-attack medical screenings, STD treatment and pregnancy tests.

Federal law requires that the providers of such services be reimbursed, with invoices sent to designated government agencies. Due to administrative errors or attempts to recover payment from insurers, however, the bills often are routed to victims themselves. Christie said the law, which took effect at once, will help ensure that victims’ needs are met, and that the individuals are treated with respect and compassion.
