Olean General Hospital is the second
western New York hospital to notify patients that they may have been exposed to
HIV or hepatitis through the improper sharing of insulin pens.
The hospital says it is mailing
letters recommending blood screening to 1,915 patients who received insulin
there from November 2009 through last week.
According to hospital officials, the
notifications follow an internal review conducted after the recent news of
insulin pen-sharing at Buffalo’s Veterans Affairs hospital.
In the Buffalo case, more than 700
patients may have been exposed to blood-borne pathogens over a two-year period
after multi-use pens intended for use on a single individual may have been used
on more than one person.
