Hundreds Protest Utah Sex Education Measure

Hundreds of people gathered Wednesday at the state Capitol Rotunda to urge Gov. Gary Herbert to veto a sex education bill.

Under the measure, only abstinence could be mentioned in the context of birth control, and school districts would be forbidden to teach the use of contraceptives, the Salt Lake Tribune reported.

The bill also would allow districts to forego offering sex education altogether. The legislation “takes Utah dangerously backward,” said Maryann Martindale, executive director of the Alliance for a Better UTAH, the rally organizer.

Herbert said he will likely make a decision on the bill next week.
