Pentagon Notes Successes on World AIDS Day

On World AIDS Day, the US Defense Department highlighted activities meant to help more than 70 other military forces support their HIV treatment programs.

The Pentagon has provided support, technical assistance, and resources for the programs of its military partners since 2001, an effort that expanded with the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, said a release from Matthew Brown, deputy director of the department’s HIV/AIDS Prevention Program.

Governments realize that AIDS weakens nations, militaries, and economies, Brown said: “HIV tackles the youngest, most productive segment of the population, and it hobbles society’s ability to function. This is exactly true in the military, because the military draws from this same population that is most at risk for HIV.”
