The Food and Drug Administration’s Office of Regulatory Affairs has set up a new website, http://www.fda.gov/healthfraud, to educate the public about health scams.
The site includes information in Spanish and English, and it explains how to report a problem with an FDA-regulated product.
In addition, FDA and the Federal Trade Commission have launched a joint effort to halt the marketing of unapproved products that claim to prevent, treat or cure HIV/AIDS, herpes, chlamydia, and genital warts.
According to the website, http://www.fda.gov/STDfraud, “Consumers and health professionals should be warned there are no over-the-counter or online drugs or dietary supplements available to treat or prevent STDs. Appropriate diagnosis and/or treatment of STDs can only occur under the supervision of a health care professional.”
