UN Security Council Passes Resolution Supporting HIV/AIDS Awareness in Peacekeeping

The Security Council gave unanimous approval to a resolution recognizing that UN peacekeeping missions “can be important contributors to an integrated response to HIV and AIDS” and welcoming “the incorporation of HIV awareness in mandated activities and outreach projects for vulnerable communities.”

The document stresses the need to ramp up HIV prevention and awareness efforts within UN missions, and it asks UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to ensure that this takes place.

Speaking at the meeting, Ban said pre-deployment HIV training and peer counseling are standard for UN peacekeepers, many more of whom volunteer for HIV testing each year.
