90, 000 HIV Patients Can't Access Drugs in Adamawa

Official records from the North-east zone of the Network of People Living with HIV/AIDS (NEPWAN) have shown that 90,000 newly infected persons in Adamawa State are currently on danger list as they cannot access retroviral drugs due to the ongoing strike in the state.

NEPWAN Zonal Coordinator Mr Abraham Zinas, who, spoke to newsmen yesterday, said the figure was obtained from available records in most public hospitals across the state.

Meanwhile, Wife of the state governor and chairperson of the State Action Committee on HIV/AIDS (SACA) Dr Halima Nyako, who spoke to newsmen on Friday at an event organized by UNICEF in the state, said efforts were being made to end the six-month-old industrial dispute in the state so that the difficulties being experienced by HIV patients would be addressed.

Pregnant women in the state lamented that the strike had hindered antenatal care in public hospitals; the situation they said had compelled many of them to go to private clinics, and others to travel to neighbouring states for medical attention.
